Why We Celebrate July 4th

Hello <<First Name>>,

The Declaration of Independence was written and signed 240 years ago by fifty-six men who knew they could be put to death for treason.  The document is a symbol of what America stands for.  Thomas Jefferson intended the Declaration to be “an expression of the American mind,”
and it was written in terms so plain and firm as to command agreement.

“We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal.” This living document has been expanded to include women and people who were enslaved at the time it was written.

“That they are endowed by their Creator.”  Our forefathers believed in a Creator who intended men to be free.

With certain unalienable Rights.”  As our forefathers prepared and adopted this declaration, they believed no government should be able to take rights away.  Government was put into place to protect those rights.

We celebrate July 4th to honor the courage those fifty-six men had in signing the Declaration of Independence and committing an action of treason against the British king.

We celebrate July 4th because the Declaration of Independence gave birth to a new nation.

We celebrate July 4th because the Declaration of Independence created a country that we sometimes take for granted while others risk their lives to enter.

I am proud to be an American.
